Minions Hay Bale Halloween 2024

The family has continued the tradition. This appears to be a repeat Minions display. It was great to see again regardless.

Too many of the decorations this year are the ones on the darker, scarier side of Halloween. I am glad to see some families put up decorations that are more positive.

End of November Adirondack Scenes

I made a world wind trip up to the Adirondacks. I almost brought my kayak. There was one body of water where I could have kayaked safely it appears with where to launch looking okay, but most places around Saranac Lake had snow and/or ice around the launches and ice on the lakes.

I was hoping they would turn on the lights, but they never did. Christmas tree on a dock as seen from the village of Saranac Lake.

The funny thing is on Thursday this lake had ice on it. On Friday morning the ice was gone. When I left on Saturday morning the ice was back. It is crazy how quick the ice forms and disappears at this point in the year.

East of Lake Placid. I think this may in be in or near Keene Valley. This area did not get much snow.

If you are American, I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday. If you live in the northern hemisphere, enjoy the transition into winter. There is beauty in every season.

Skeletons and Signs

I am usually not much into Halloween. However, creative displays I am into. The first two below are part of one such display in Fishkill, NY.

This one was part of the same display of the skeletons below. They had a whole cemetery set up with headstones. Obviously a joke.
This is creative so to speak. It goes beyond just having a skeleton in your yard. They also had two skeletons on a seesaw that was constantly going up and down. It was hard to get that one in a picture being close to the house and close to a fence.
These signs are not Halloween related. It may be half joke, half serious. This was on a rural road in New York. Those of you fleeing NYC, welcome to upstate New York.

If you celebrate it- Happy Halloween!

Autumn Birds

Have you ever felt you missed out on something? I missed the peak of leaf season. These were taken maybe 1-2 weeks after peak. When I arrived at the lake there was a thick fog. Maybe 15 minutes later it started thinning out.

Great blue heron when the fog was lifting.
Do all gulls look this peeved? Maybe he’s not looking forward to going south?
The swans were flying circles around the lake. Usually you only seeing them swimming. Could they be getting themselves in shape to fly south?

The swan has some hitchhikers on it. The black objects attached to it’s body are what locals call bull’s heads or steer’s heads. They have multiple sharp points. They are not fun to step on.

Get out and enjoy the conditions while you can. It will be winter before you know it.

Milea Estate Vineyard Vintage Truck Advertising

What do you do with an old truck? Use it to advertise a business. This is one I found on a rural road in Dutchess County, New York. As you can see, this one has been restored. Since Taste N. Y. is a state slogan to advertise New York food products, I am thinking this truck may not be road operable. Get out and enjoy fall before all the leaves are off the trees, even on a dreary day.

I don’t drink alcoholic beverages, but I will visit wineries, breweries, etc. to see their displays. Some of the micro breweries in New York are known for their food and you can order non- alcoholic drinks.

Minions Hay Bale Art 2022

It is October 1st and what anticipated display has returned? The yearly Minions display! This house in the Hudson Valley of New York has put up different Minions displays for autumn in their yard for at least the past three years.

The past two years the display advertised a business. Last year it was Dunkin Donuts. This year it is RIMS driving school. I wonder if they get sponsorship through this? They should.

For those who asked: There is a stiff metal piece that is the base for the arm and goes into the hay bale. It looks like they shaped the metal to go the way they wanted the arms to go. The arms have some sort of material wrapped around the metal piece.

Hay Bale Autumn and Halloween decorations are more common in some areas of the country over others. It is always great to see the creativeness of our neighbours. Happy Autumn! Happy October!

Lake Colby

Want another lake to paddle just outside the village of Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of New York? Lake Colby may fit the bill. Lake Colby is on Route 86 just north of the village of Saranac Lake and across the street from the Adirondack Medical Center. It has a swimming beach with a large parking lot at the south end of route 86 and a boat ramp with parking on the north end of Route 86.

You can see the restrictions on this sign on Route 86 north of Saranac Lake. Boats with motors no more than 10 HP are allowed on the lake. I actually took this picture on my way out.

This was the second lake I hit in the same day on a short weekend trip in October. The weather did not cooperate most of the time. It was mostly overcast and dark during this day with short periods with brief views of blue skies.

Wildlife

Although it has been said there are loons and eagles here I did not see any. Eagles seem to travel between bodies of water in the Adirondacks. I did see multiple great blue herons and Canadian Geese.

This lake had a multitude of heron when I visited.
A lake side structure that looked to be in the midst of a remodel.

It seemed like there were only a few houses or camps along this lake. I saw no camping signs, however, other websites say there are two on the lake. These campsites are usually first come first served.

This is another lake I highly recommend. It had nice scenery, it is close to the village of Saranac Lake, and has wildlife to see. Viewing wildlife is always a plus for me. I did not take pictures on the opposite side. It had an old railroad tracks that people were fishing from.

Lake Flower Fall

Saranac Lake has several lakes nearby. One you can see from the town itself is Lake Flower. Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Inn is a vintage hotel right on Lake Flower with updated rooms. They loan out to guests kayaks, canoes, and bikes. You can launch a kayak or canoe right from the hotel grounds. They are close to a marina, ice cream shop, and a short walk to shops. They have lovely views on Lake Flower from some of the rooms and from their grounds..

If you missed going up to the Adirondacks during peak leaf season this year, you should consider going next year. It is one of the prettiest areas of the state in autumn.

Fall in Lake Placid

They say the colours were not brilliant this year. I had a three day weekend and decided to visit the Adirondacks regardless and get some hiking and kayaking in. I was there for a day and a half. The following pictures I took whilst kayaking Mirror Lake in Lake Placid on the morning I left to return home.

Adirondack chairs on a dock.
Early morning paddle on a canoe.
I really did not know this heron was there until I was right next to it. I was looking at pictures in the back of my camera and drifting towards a house under renovations with a lot of noise. This guy never moved. Taken with a 24- 120 lens.

Get out and enjoy the outdoors even if they say the conditions will not be optimal. You will appreciate it anyways.
