What can you do with a large concrete wall? You can turn it into a mosaic or mural. This is exactly what they did in North Creek, N.Y.
This mosaic is on Main Street in North Creek. The mosaic depicts the animals and activities that make the Adirondacks what it is. It was artist Kate Hartley’s idea to turn this 180 foot concrete wall into a mosaic. She had the help of over 700 volunteers including students from the area and visitors, so this was a community project.
Overview
I could not get pictures of the whole wall. There were cars parked in front of it. Below are the sections I could get. The rest I took closer pictures of sections of the wall.

Activities
They did a great job picking out activities that one can do in summer in the area.
Hiking

White Water Rafting

Kayaking or White Water Kayaking

Tubing

Camping

Canoeing

Wildlife
Moose

Great Blue Heron

Black Bear

Pileated Woodpecker

Loon

Again these pictures do not represent the entire mosaic. I love seeing artwork like murals and mosaics. It is always a bonus to find out it was a community project. I think this mosaic did a great job representing the local area. If you are skiing Gore in Winter or White Water rafting the Hudson River, stop by and check out the mosaic. It’s Purely Adirondack.
North Creek is part of my wife’s stomping grounds—the mosaic must be new since we last visited—about seven years ago. We’d remember that!

You can’t miss it if you go on Main Street. That little town has a lot to do in summer nearby. They also have Gore Mountain, a popular place in winter. It sounds like it was completed in 2020.

Yes—we haven’t been out that way for seven, eight years and don’t always go into North Creek—she’s a Johnsburg girl!

Students from Johnsburg participated along with other schools. I think the artist behind all of it is from there as well!

Most muralists do a great job. It is rare to see a mosaic this large. They rocked it!

I love mosaics! This one looks so fun, I’ve never seen one depicting such activities – and they seem so fun! (here, in post-Soviet territory mosaics would not have any motion or emotion expressed, they are more like a propaganda tool)

Many times art reflects landscape by itself or portraits of people. Showing typical summer activities and wildlife in the area makes it unique. I have seen murals showing historical events/ scenes. Mosaics here are few and far between.

Hi Sharon, Thanks for your comments and beautiful photos of the North Creek Mosaic Project! I’m the creator, Kate Hartley, and over 2,000 volunteers helped to create the 230-foot-long mural! Our theme is the nature and recreation of the area on an ideal spring day… when summer is around the corner, but the diehards are still on the mountain!
A customer at H’ART Studio & Gallery stopped in the show me your wonderful blog post!
