This is the female version of the red-bellied woodpecker. The male has red all the way to and including its crown. The female does not have red on the crown. It looks like it has a bald head.

These pictures were taken last weekend in a wetlands area in a different county that I found the male.

I am having issues tagging photos tonight. Is anyone else? It deletes as I am typing them. Anytime I contact Word Press anymore they do not respond.
Have a great weekend! If you have good weather catch some rays and get some Vitamin D.
Great shots, Sharon!

Always like these birds. Makes me think of “Little Red Riding Hood”. The hood anyway with a different kind of cape.

It is. I think the male version should be bald though , ha!

Nice clear shot of this badly named bird. I understand the Red-Headed was taken, but then pick a characteristic you rarely see for the name ugh. Not their fault, of course, we can still enjoy them when they are out and about.

I’m sure it has a little red on its belly. I don’t have shots that clearly show that. I don’t know what would fit better, maybe red mohawk woodpecker?

I like that name! There is red there, but you are not going to get to see it very often.
