This was another first for me. Owls occupy most of my birding. I saw the glossy ibis at a large wildlife refuge in Central New York during a long weekend vacation trip.

All of these are quite far away taken with a zoom lens and heavily cropped. The first day I was there they mainly stuck to hiding amongst the plants. They were farther away the first day and luckily someone at the refuge with a powerful spotting scope located and let me view them.

They seemed to stick to the island like areas in the wetlands and occasionally on the second day went in the water. They came closer the second day and these images are from then.

There were two of them. Sometimes they were close together and other times they were near to each other, but not that close.
These images are not that great, but I was happy to see them regardless. Maybe sometime in the future I can witness them up closer. Have a great week.
Wonderful. They summer here.

It seems some are here spring through fall at least.

Nice sighting! I have them spring to fall too. This past spring before the farmer planted the crop a mile from me, glossies were always there every morning, the best day I counted 138 glossies in his field! I was quite excited, lol.

Wow! That sounds like quite the gathering. Was that a morning coffee meet up? Ha! Or were that many really living within close proximity to each other? We’re you able to see any within good range?

Each morning, they were spread out over the field always with a small flock of cattle egrets dispersed around them. Some within 20 ft of the low traveled road. ‘Our’ glossies spend their nights on Poplar Island on the Chesapeake Bay, then disperse to our surrounding area in flocks, and they seemed to love that field to forage on every day. I purposely road over in my car or golf cart to see the day’s number to report to eBird. Then the summer crop got planted and they were instantly gone.

I saw two this August in my neck of the woods, Calgary, Alberta, in western Canada at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Not their usual habitat. (My current post, also some Great Horned Owlets pics too.) Glad I stumbled into your beautiful blog.

We are getting birds you don’t normally see, some due to the wild fires a year ago in Canada. The ibus is starting to make a presence here. Small, but some are here.

I know you travel a lot. Where are you located? NYC?

I do not travel as much as you think. Blogging is a hobby. I have a regular job. I live well north of the city, but am able to go there for appointments and such after work.
