I have had loons swim under my kayak before. This time a mother loon called to her mate. The mate came swimming back to watch the baby loon. The mother promptly went under water and popped up above water on the other side of my kayak. In its mouth was a big fish.

She then went under the water and I could locate her by the light coloured fish she had in her mouth going under my kayak. She then popped up on the side she was originally on, but close to my kayak. I thought for sure she was going to share it with her mate. Nope! I can’t believe she ate the whole thing herself!

Was she showing up her mate by catching a big one so fast? Was she showing off to me? Nature is better than TV. Loons are pretty cool birds. As always keep your distance. If they approach you, let it be on their terms.
Wow! What a great moment!

In a canoe or kayak with a zoom lens is the way to go.

I do miss hearing loons call. But what amazes me about your photos isn’t that she ate the whole fish herself but that she could eat something that big at all. I can’t work out the mechanics of how she did it.

It did not take her long either. She did seemingly chew on it a bit and dip it into the water. She angled it different ways on her beak. It was surprising to me . I thought she could not eat that all by herself.

I’m happy. The owls I normally follow I think were harassed by people in the woods. They were fine with me but were being more elusive. Kind of a shame. So I feel fortunate to witness this loon family.

Shame on those who harass wildlife!

This reminds me of a time I was fishing out of my kayak, and the loon wanted my catch more than me. Seeing their gorgeous red eyes and MASSIVE neck.. I realized how actually powerful these creatures are. What a moment. Love the post!

If I were fishing I would think if an eagle or loon wanted my fish I would give it up. Part of it is I would not want to mess with them, part of it is okay you can take it.
