Osprey With a Fish

I finally saw the osprey go down to get a fish. Unfortunately, the pictures of him going in the water and coming out did not come out well because that happened behind a little scraggily bush on the other side of a very tiny island. These, however, came out okay.

Osprey With a Fish

It actually caught the fish right next to the shore. It started carrying it in the direction of the nest.

At this point I think it spotted another fish under the water and looked down for a while when flying. It did not appear to be looking at the fish it was carrying. When taking these shots it looked like he was going for a second catch on one run.

Osprey With a Fish

He took this fish to his perching spot near the nest and ate the whole thing himself. He did not share with his mate in the nest. These were taken at quite a distance with a zoom lens and are heavily cropped. Have a happy Wednesday!

Osprey New Season

This pair was the first one I caught arriving back. They seem to be the most active pair. I am not sure if the nest survived from the winter and they just add to it, or if they had to start anew. I only just started exploring this area of the river.

The male is arriving back at the nest. This nest is far away, so these images are taken with a zoom lens and heavily cropped.

Osprey New Season

The above photo was yesterday. This is the first time I saw both hang out for a long time in the nest. Could there be eggs yet? It was a warmer spring day with little to no winds. Get out and enjoy the first signs of spring.

Osprey in Tree March 2025

Today I went down to see the osprey nest on the Hudson River. I was not expecting much as the sky was dark all day, it was foggy/hazy, and I did not see much in the later part of the week after work. It was actually a good day despite the conditions.

Osprey in Tree March 2025- flying towards tree

I was on a section of a walking trail along the river I had not been on yet and almost missed it. I was talking to a nice older couple, when I saw this Osprey fly into a tree close to the trail and on the river.

After it landed its mate came flying up to the same tree about 10 minutes later. They stayed a few minutes more then flew off.

The older couple followed me to a closer look out and got their own pictures as well.

Most of my pictures were not tack sharp, but not the worst. There was a lot of action and it was great to see it. I was informed by the local fishermen that it may be tough to get a spot to view the nest as the seasons for one particular fish opens very soon. They expect the park to be flooded with fishermen. Have a great week!

Close Encounter With an Osprey

I need to stop in at this little park on the Hudson River as much as I can. Luckily it is not too far off the beaten path from my long commute home from work. Two out of three times I have been there I have had close fly-bys of an Osprey scanning the river and creek for fish. It is not far from a nest, but I am not sure this osprey is attached to that nest.

Close Encounter with an Osprey

Some day I hope to see and get shots of it going in the water and coming up with a fish. I have seen an osprey fly to the nest from this direction with a fish, so I am hoping everything aligns some day. Have a great week!

Osprey Howdy!

This osprey flew right at me. It is the first osprey sighting of the new year for me and a good harbinger of spring.

I saw this on a park on the Hudson River in New York. It followed what looked like a creek upstream. We looked at the trees around the wetland and the creek like area, but could see no sign of it. It was not the best lighting being before sunset and mostly cloudy, but I will take it. Have a great Friday.

Osprey with Fish

While kayaking a lake that is mostly shallow, I saw this osprey hanging out there. I think it flies between another body of water and this one. It seemed to come back to the same area of the lake when it caught the fish.

Osprey with Fish

I did see it splash into the water on the other side of the lake before it flew back in circles with a fish. Lucky for me that it landed nearby.

Osprey with Fish

Look at those talons speared into the fish. I am assuming the fish is already dead.

Osprey with Fish

He seemingly holds on with one foot. This was a cloudy day and very windy. Sitting in my kayak to try to take shots was far from steady. I’m still okay with these. Here’s hoping to see one dive in close by in the future. Have a great weekend.

If You Build it, They Will Come: Osprey

I believe in order to control where osprey build nests in different spots in New York they are building platforms on top of telephone / power poles etc, to attract their nest building to that location. I usually see these as active osprey nests once they are built.

If You Build it, They Will Come: Osprey. – It even has a pole to perch on.

This osprey nest had two osprey on it when I first saw it , but one flew away to an area with possibly a creek or river nearby. I assume this is an adult. I do not think I saw any young. I am guessing they fledged already.

It was a nice find. My GPS actually led me the wrong way to get to the nearby location I was stopping at. I’m actually glad it did. It had me backtrack and go a different way when I continued ahead after it readjusted. A mistake by the GPS worked out to be a good thing. Take advantage of these moments. Have a great week!

Busy Osprey Family

I went to check on the Osprey family this weekend. Parents were flying in and out of the nest, which is a good sign the baby or babies hatched.

Busy Osprey Family

I was hoping to see a parent bring in a fish, but not this time.

Busy Osprey Family – Baby head pops up

I only got a few pictures that included a baby osprey. This is one of them. I do not know if this is the only one.

Busy Osprey Family – Feeding the young fish

I do not think the parent was feeding herself here. They seemed to be handing off low to a baby in the nest.

Busy Osprey Family – Reinforcing the nest

I did not witness a fish being brought in, but saw one of the parents bring in a stick, Considering there is visible in this picture a big hole in this nest, it is probably a good idea. Were you busy this weekend? I hope you had time to relax.

Watch the Eyes! – Osprey

Watch the Eyes! The Osprey seems to be thinking as its mate is flying in. These landings look risky to me.

Watch the Eyes! – Osprey

This nest either has little babies or eggs that have not hatched yet. In the time I was there the mate only flew out to chase perceived threats. No fish were brought in.

Watch the Eyes! – Osprey

I wonder if an osprey ever injuries its mate when flying back into the nest.

Watch the Eyes! – Osprey. The couple is keeping a watchful eye around it.
Watch the Eyes! – Osprey. Most likely flying to chase off a possible threat.

Although they seem to have babies later than owls and eagles, it is still that time of year for new life. Pause to reflect on those who gave the ultimate sacrifice that we may be free.

Wildlife near the Hudson River

I went kayaking again starting on a creek that empties into the Hudson River. The river is thriving more than in the past and there are a lot of different kinds of birds and other critters to see along its banks.

This creek has a lot of heron.
Off towards the river
I have no idea what this eagle brought up from the creek.
They were holding onto something.
A juvenile eagle came looking to snatch away whatever the adult caught.
Another adult came to chase the younger one away.
There are a lot of herons in or near the river.
I did not see whom this osprey was trying to impress, but he kept flying around me with the fish. I’m sure it was not me, but he still gave me the opportunity to get some shots off.
Heron flying over the river.

Get out and enjoy nature! It is amazing what is just outside your door.
