I knew when I took this pictures it did not quite look exactly like a great blue heron and it appeared smaller than a great blue. It wasn’t until I got home and looked at these on the computer that I figured out it was a juvenile tricoloured heron.

I do not think I got any shots of an adult tricoloured heron. This bird can be seen along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast of the U.S. up to Massachusetts. They are considered year round residents according to All About Birds.

They usually forage alone for small fish.

I witnessed this one catch a few while I was watching it.

Have a restful Labor Day!
Such beautiful elegant birds, no matter the colour. Great shots Sharon. Allan

Maybe in the future I can capture one in better light. I went to that location three weekends this summer and only saw this one on one day. I love seeing variety.

That would be wonderful, but I’m so satisfied with the photos you have shown us.

Don’t you just love the on-screen surprise? Nice captures.

It wasn’t close. I could tell it wasn’t a great blue. I’m not always sure when juveniles are involved either. Many times I have to see it on the computer when distance is an issue. Yes, totally cool to find out I’ve photographed one I have not seen or seldom seen.

I have never seen one in NY. I had to go 4 hours away to NJ to catch one. They are supposed to be in coastal NY though. I’ve seen your lovely herons in London parks.
