This was shot from today. A lot of action with the owls repeatedly trying to knock the hawks off the posts. I had just arrived and the spots close to the action were crowded. I took these standing in between people from behind. This very large area of acreage shuts down access to most of the land after the short eared owls arrive to protect them. People are allowed to stand in certain areas very small areas on the land. The owls will fly close to where the people are allowed to stand.

The light was not ideal as it was cloudy and on the dark side before sunset. We are expecting rain the next few days which is greatly needed. Have a great week!
Great shot!

Got there too late to be in front. I got a few shots off though. They were fun to watch.

It’s fun to watch. No harm done to the hawk.

I always enjoy the interplay of birds trying to establish the pecking order. It is amazing the larger birds tolerate it. Happy Monday Sharon. Allan

The poor hawk was born there and lives there year round. She’s a favorite since she will come close to people and is unfazed. The shorties come in before winter and leave after spring starts. They act like they own the place when they come.😀

My dad worked at a guard house where birds would sit on the wires. He saw one land and another move over to allow space. Kindness.

They compete for the same food: voles. However there must be millions there. When the trails are open anywhere you stop you hear voles scampering in the grass. There is plenty for all.

What a truly wonderful photo. It’s a story all by itself.

They certainly put on a show. The hawk lives there all year and was born there. The short eared owls come before winter and stay sometimes after spring starts. They act like they own the place when they come.😀

Let’s hope the hawk is strong enough to keep his seat.

Normally I would go the other way with an Owl encounter, but in this case my money is on the Red-Tailed, especially if it was a female – those large bodied Hawks can hold their own. Great shot.
