The short-eared owls have been back a few weeks. They are taking no prisoners. There are not letting the hawks hang out on the posts. This reminds me of Sheldon in Big Bang Theory. He did not like anyone sitting in his chair.

The short-eared owls would fly up and try to knock the hawks off the posts. They were also chasing them around the refuge.

The owls are not landing on any of the numerous posts put up for perching. Hopefully they will soon. Sometimes that is your best chance at a decent shot because you can lower the shutter speed.

The hawks had free range of the refuge since spring. The owls are upsetting the Apple cart.

North of town is a river road. The running water and the wooded area combines to be a devotion sanctuary.

Great captures, Sharon. I always wish all of us were better with sharing.

There have to be thousands and thousands of voles at this location. When the trails are open you can stop anywhere and hear a vole scratching around in the grass. Don’t think 5-8 hawks and 7-8 (liberal estimates) short eared would make a serious dent in the population. Don’t think the hawks or owls need to worry about it.

I’m lucky if I get to see one Barn Owl in a year. To see up to 8 in one location is something I can only dream about.

These are short eared owls. I have yet to see a barn owl in New York. They are here and are rare. Ebird will list the county they are sighted in but not town to protect it.

Can’t we all just get along ha. Owls are definitely cocky, but that just adds to the mystique – guessing the Hawks have another name for it!
