I believe this is a green winged teal. If I am wrong let me know. This is one of the many birds I saw in London in one of the parks.

The green winged teal is a dabbling duck. According to Ducks Unlimited they visit shallow waters such as flooded fields and marshes. They feed by tipping up rather than diving.

I am still going back to the many bird photos I took in England and trying to identify them. Happy Columbus Day if you are in the U.S. Happy Thanksgiving if you are in Canada!
What a beauty!

It’s interesting by the colors and pattern. I just wish I could see more variety here.

So cool! I saw this in London so I’m guessing it’s the European version. I think the one in America is maybe only slightly different. It’s hard to spot anything other than mallards here. The other ducks are very camera and people shy.

If you look at ducks, they look so plain, but on closer inspection, the patterns and colours are quite striking. Happy Columbus Day Sharon. Allan

We do not often get to see them up close. The zoom lens help.

The Merlin app is helping. Even then sometimes if it is a juvenile or is close in appearance to another bird I have issues. I love the pattern on this bird. Lovely colours as well.

Such pretty colors. Do the different pigmentations of birds feathers happen because of different food substances in their diet, thus different pigmentations?

I’m not sure the answer to that. I’m going to have to read up.

That’s a nice comparison. You don’t see how detailed they are until you zoom in close.

Yes, it is indeed a Green-winged Teal, teals are such pretty ducks! Care for more info? hehe 😉 There are two sub-species of the Green-winged Teal, the Eurasian GWTeal and the American GWTeal. Yours here should be, of course, the Eurasian subspecies since it was seen in London and you can confirm that ID by the horizontal white stripe on the side of the teal, which your photo shows. The American subspecies has a vertical white stripe on its side, instead of horizontal. On occasion, an Eurasian shows up in the mix of the American GWTEs in the U.S. and is considered rare; but I’ve seen several over the years. 🙂

I may have seen an American Teal from quite a distance mixed in with many ducks in the states, but not close enough for a good photo for identification.
