I had a long weekend, so I made the trek out to central New York to visit a wildlife refuge. I saw this small water bird that was swimming not too far out from the wildlife drive. It seemed to spend more time underwater then above water, so it was hard to capture.

To me it is very cute. Can anyone confirm what kind of water bird this is? Is it a pied billed grebe? Have a great week!
Yes! Pied-billed grebe, a cute one.

A non mating one correct? This is the first time I saw one. I saw other birds at this refuge for the first time. It’s a migration stop over. They say spring is better. I might make that a spring long weekend destination in the future.

That I don’t know. But that beak is unmistakeable. I see them occasionally in my neck of the woods (two or three times a year if the birding gods smile on me). 🙂
