Short-Eared Owl Fly By

I went for a couple of hours to watch the short-eared owls again. This time from the viewing platform, which I usually stay away from. I was lucky they flew nearby, but not too close a few times.

They seemed to have come out earlier today than yesterday. It was before sunset started.

All pictures were taken with a zoom lens and are heavily cropped.

Short-Eared Owl Fly By -This one is checking us out.

Tonight they spent a lot of time flying to the trees on the edge of the property, which are beyond the trails. It looked like there may have between 8-11. I wonder if it is a gathering before they head back up to northern Canada or the Arctic.

Short-Eared Owl Fly By – Checking us out again

I am guessing they are just as curious at times about us as they do look in our direction. What do you think?

  1. They are cool birds to see. When I lived in Utah we saw them often certain seasons, but I wasn’t a photographer or birder then, so didn’t know how much I’d want to see them decades later. There’s one spot in Washington some hours from us where people see them every winter. We got to enjoy a show similar to yours 3 weeks ago, but too far to revisit frequently like you are doing.

    1. This place is close to me, so I am lucky in that regard. The place gets a lot of visitors from other nearby states especially on weekends and holidays. That makes it hard to see them on the weekends. They do come back every year. Usually between 4-6 it seems are usually here, but presently people are saying 8 plus. I have this week off, so I am trying to get there as much as I can. I work far away from where I live, so by the time I get home it is dark. I spent many a Sunday afternoon since the beginning of December not seeing them close enough to take a picture with a zoom. Again, I feel very fortunate to have this place nearby.
