I went for a couple of hours to watch the short-eared owls again. This time from the viewing platform, which I usually stay away from. I was lucky they flew nearby, but not too close a few times.

They seemed to have come out earlier today than yesterday. It was before sunset started.

All pictures were taken with a zoom lens and are heavily cropped.

Tonight they spent a lot of time flying to the trees on the edge of the property, which are beyond the trails. It looked like there may have between 8-11. I wonder if it is a gathering before they head back up to northern Canada or the Arctic.

I am guessing they are just as curious at times about us as they do look in our direction. What do you think?
I think they are showing off. Don’t you wish you could fly? is what they are saying. Have a good evening Sharon Allan

That too ha! I wish sometimes I could fly, but I am afraid of heights. I am guessing no bird has ever said that. Have a great week!

They are cool birds to see. When I lived in Utah we saw them often certain seasons, but I wasn’t a photographer or birder then, so didn’t know how much I’d want to see them decades later. There’s one spot in Washington some hours from us where people see them every winter. We got to enjoy a show similar to yours 3 weeks ago, but too far to revisit frequently like you are doing.

This place is close to me, so I am lucky in that regard. The place gets a lot of visitors from other nearby states especially on weekends and holidays. That makes it hard to see them on the weekends. They do come back every year. Usually between 4-6 it seems are usually here, but presently people are saying 8 plus. I have this week off, so I am trying to get there as much as I can. I work far away from where I live, so by the time I get home it is dark. I spent many a Sunday afternoon since the beginning of December not seeing them close enough to take a picture with a zoom. Again, I feel very fortunate to have this place nearby.

They are beautiful and I feel lucky! It took many visits to see them close enough with a zoom to photograph.

Such great shots. It was my owl-living sister who passed away last month. She would have loved these.

Sorry for your loss! Every time you see an owl now you will remember her. I’m sure any owl sightings she would appreciate. I love seeing others pictures of owls.

Two days in a row after many days of them not close enough to photograph. I went today and they were too far away to take pictures.

At least you had those days when they were close and you were able to get those wonderful photos!

Even better shots of the SEs Sharon. I think they are definitely as curious towards us as we are towards them – probably making sure we are not a threat to their food supply ha!

Nice Sharon. Always amazed at the wing span of “short”eared owls. And their something to be said for repeat visists. And finally, sunny days?
