Loons are fun birds to watch. I took 3 kayak trips on a lake over three days. Each time I watch these loons for an hour or so. I have a zoom lens ,an extender and these are cropped.

The lighting changed even within the hour or so I watched them this day. It depended on which way they were facing, cloud cover, and what objects they were near. In this case I believe the green colour was a reflection in the water from a boat cover. The mom kept the little one near the shore of the lake.

The parents kept parading around with small fish that seemed much too big for the baby. I think the baby finally ate them when they cut them in pieces. It is fun to watch nature. Loons are becoming my favourite birds. They have such personality.
Perfect picture to start a day, great photos

I would love to live in their range someday, so I could see and hear them. The sun gave an ethereal quality to your colors.

The reflection of the boat cover helped as well. I see them on the Long Island Sound in winter. In summer the Adirondacks. In Canada I believe the one dollar coin is called the loonie. It would be a dream to live on a lake where you would hear them.

My family vacationed years ago in Maine. Dad and I sat in the canoe swirling our fly lines in broad figure-eights, more interested in the twilight on the water than the fishing. Loons on the opposite side of the pond called and sang and filled me with their mysterious longing. My heart will never forget. I wrote about it a few years back: http://rabbitlaneutah.com/2021/04/25/one-night-in-maine/. Happy looning.

I can’t comment on the post. They do sound haunting at night. The communication with the babies is different. I have heard a call back and forth in the morning that sounded like laughing.

Beautiful shots and a lovely study of the feeding of a baby loon. I’ve never seen loons, but I guess this must be a common loon (Gavia immer)?

Yes, it is a common loon. The baby spent a lot of time on its mothers back. The father would come by and pass it a fish while on her back or when it was in the water.

I would love to hear their mournful cry in the wilds too.

Utterly charming! I wish a Loon would turn up on the tiny river at the bottom of our garden!

Lovely. When we lived in Minnesota and got out to the lakes we loved hearing their calls.
