Eaglet Not Flying

I saw this eaglet on the ground not moving around much. It was near the nest tree. When the wind picked up it did walk and flap its wings. Did not see real flying effort.

The man who lives closest to the nest claims it is fine and he has seen it fly. I was there on and off for about 4 hours. I did not see it fly. The parent came by a few times and sropped food off in the nest, but no one saw it drop food off to this one.

This was at the edge of a field. Later it walked on a seldom used dirt road.

Its wing feathers don’t look to healthy. Maybe that is the issue. I am hoping it can get up to a branch tonight and fly to a higher branch. I am concerned about the coyotes, bobcats, and fox in the area getting it.

Does anyone have a clue? Someone else was messaging someone tonight about this eaglet. It looks like it has a problem.

  1. Can you call your local wildlife rescue? They should have eagle experts who can come and rescue him. What a beauty! I have called them successfully for Great White Herons, an injured Great Horned Owl and raccoons. Good luck. They love fish. Maybe you can give him some. It does look injured or unwell. Poor thing. I hope his is okay.

  2. Sad to see them struggle. I had a Merlin falcon chick on my lawn last year that was just learning to fly and the crows had him cornered until I came out to help. Nature can be tough. Allan

    1. Plenty of food here. It is close to different bodies of water with the parents able to bring in fish a few times a day and other small animals. There were three, now two eaglets. Both left have feather issues. Parent has minor one. They don’t seem to fight. Someone thinks maybe an issue with bugs in the nest? Not sure I remember what they were saying.

  3. Like some baby birds they sometimes fall out of their nests or get pushed by a sibling. Eagles are large by nature, but that doesn’t mean it’s still not a developed “child” strong enough yet to get to higher ground. You may have to create a “coyote watch party” and all take shifts to prevent anything from happening to it. Nice images, thanks for sharing.

  4. As of Tuesday afternoon, the last I heard it is still not flying. My understanding is a DEC person came and said it is fine since it is walking around. Because of who owns / controls the land they I believe are being deferred to as what happens. Additionally they seem late to get out of the nest this year. I will give another update later.
