Some action around the nest tonight. A hawk was getting too close and was chased a few times by one of the parents. It did not seem to worry the babies. They spent their time snoozing and watching me. They are starting to look more like owls and less like aliens.
These are taken from quite a distance away and heavily cropped. I am sure there are others with much sharper images out there. This nest is also on private land.

They look so sober–I want to say disapproving, although I know that’s just how they’re built.

They are to be feared though. They are the A of the owl world. They will go after people. They will attack hawks and eagles to get their nest or steal their young or kill them. This nest was a hawk’s. The parent who stayed in the nest always looked peeved. Now that they are out of the nest, not so peeved.

They are starting to look cute. One parent is always close by now as a hawk is trying to get close to the nest. Perhaps the same one the parents fought for its nest.
