Although otters can be found in New York in places such as the Adirondacks and the Hudson Valley, I have not spotted one in the wild in New York. I have only seen them at zoos. Last summer I did see some in England. There were multiple on one body of water.

Otters are fun to watch but hard to photograph. The day I saw these was a typical dark, dreary day, so the lighting was not optimal. They move quite fast and do not stay put long, so I had a hard time getting their head in focus and catching them while they were facing in somewhat my direction.

Regardless, they were fun to see. Have a great rest of your week.
Otters are amazing – I’ve only seen them in wild once or twice. Well done for getting such terrific pictures of them.

They are fun! I think I’ve seen them at two or more zoos. The last one I saw them at the glass was so stained up from people touching it etc. pictures were impossible.

Nice images, Sharon. They are reclusIve creatures. A friend locally said he saw one in a nearby river for the first time in a decade or so.

I’ve seen some info online saying a few locations they have been sighted specifically in NY. Not sure that means I will find them there late spring or not. Some animals like beavers may stay in the same area and maintain their lodge from year to year. Barred owls stay in the same general area 1-2 mile radius but from year to year they may be in a different tree hole. I’m going to have to read up on otters. If I can’t find them here it’s okay. I don’t think I could get better images than these. How hyper they seem, how they flit from place to place, they hardly face you, etc. I don’t think I could do better.
