I was in a parking lot near my apartment when I heard these coyotes howling on the night of the Beaver Moon. I quickly went to my car as I did not want to chance becoming coyote food.
I’m not not sure if it was the moon they were howling at or if it was the usual calling the pack to dinner. The actually sounded closer than this video that my phone picked up. My area has an abundance of deer. I have never heard this many coyotes before. Did anyone else have an interesting experience with animals on the night of the Beaver Moon?
Spooky!

Definitely is! I have heard 1-3 howling before several times. This sounded like 8-10 or more.

Well, at least someone was having a “howling” good time. One can’t deny nature. When visiting Yosemite so many, many years ago, some backpackers on their way to an outlying hike in camp remarked in the late fall afternoon about the dogs barking in the distance. Someone then said those aren’t dogs. Maybe coyotes or even wolves. It made the hikers/backpackers a little more circumspect on their walk going forward.

Coywolves in this part of the country are known to attack people. It’s a hybrid between a coyote and wolf they believe started in the Algonquin Park I believe. Also in NY coyotes attacked a biker on a bike trail, grabbed a toddler a mom was holding the hand of and tried to pull it away, etc. one year. They thought they ate a rabid animal and were rabid themselves. I would not take chances.

As Paul Harvey would say, “Now for the rest of the story…..” Learning this I might not have been so flippant in my response. Wild animals are wild, and it’s always best to be cautious. Rabid animals even more so. And sad about the coyote wolves. Not their fault exactly they either ate or were bitten by an infected animal. I love the squirrels in my backyard, but would never allow them to feed out of my hand Even though they get pretty close when I put out food for them, I still watch, and they generally jump away. If they didn’t, that would concern me and I would have to contact someone about the animal. Be safe, Sharon.

I did not take your response as flippant. It’s all good. You never know what the story is with animals. They put some bears to sleep this summer because they were getting a little too people friendly. Turns out people were feeding them at a campground. Not the bears fault. If you feed the birds , squirrels always end of part of it. They even found a rabid beaver this summer in NY. Kind of odd, I thought they were plant eaters but maybe something bit it.
