Did you know some pubs are named for trades that were prominent in the area? There are 37 Bricklayer’s Arms pubs in the U.K. according to pubnames.co.uk. This is one named after that trade.

I came across this pub while walking through London. It was 31 Gresse Street which is north of Oxford Street and west of Tottenham Court Road in the Camden section of the city. It is not far from the Tottenham Court Station.

Back long ago a pub being named for a trade may have shown where people could meet others in a similar trade. It might also help them meet people to procure work if they were new in the trade. Brick laying is still an occupation that is active. It is great to see the long time trades honoured through signs like these.
Pubs are great places for socializing and to specify according to trade may have started with the guilds era. The sign is interesting for sure. Allan

The hub of villages and many times the only restaurant there.

Years ago when I was a student at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, we used to go to a pub called the Adam & Eve, which claimed to have been around since the 13th century, and had been established for the masons working on Norwich Cathedral. It had a fabulous beer garden.

It’s amazing how these old buildings are still holding up well. Obviously they knew what they were doing way back when. Also people have endeavored to keep them up. I love hearing the historical background of places like that. Thanks for sharing!

If I ever get back to doing art work the pub building would make a nice drawing or painting.

Interesting, that didn’t occur to me before, but it definitely makes sense – especially with the concept like-minded friends and employment opportunities to hang out with.

I noticed the comment above from Emma. Norwich is my closest city (15 miles away) and the first pub you see is The Brickmakers! A great place that supports local music and bands. Took my wife (then girlfriend) there on our first date. Many years later our daughter played a gig there with her band.

Always good to see community oriented activities at a pub like music night, trivia night, as well as football and rugby matches televised. On a trip with friends prior to Covid we went to see a friend’s band play in a pub in a small town in Worcestershire.
