When the owls come out in better light it gives me a chance to up the shutter speed to 1/2000 of a second. This enables me to stop the action better and get less blur and more details in the image.

Many times they are coming out at sunset or after sunset. To try to reduce noise in the photos I had lower shutter speeds in early photos. Many of those photos have blur in the wings and do not have sharp details. I have a lot of shots the last two or three days I went where they came out prior to sunset. This photo was still lightened. Hopefully your week is not as soggy as mine so far.
Your owl photos continue to amaze and delight.

Nice Shots Sharon!βWe apparently were too late getting down here to southern Texas this year and missed them in their usual spot as they had already headed north.β

We get some short-eared every year. Usually about 4-6. Some days there may be 10-12. Maybe some head back early? I think they counted 3 tonight. Everyone seemed to focus on the one though. They also think this location is a stopping point for others heading back up to Canada.

Gorgeous flight shot, yet again, Sharon! You know I’ve been envious, lol. Guess what? I gotta a secret….I went on a birding trip to an island on the Chesapeake Bay and FINALLY saw my first Short-eared Owl!!! Lifer!!! π It flushed up from the meadow. I have a flight shot of it flying away, darn it, but I got a shot. Woot! π I’ll be posting about Poplar Island some time next week, I’m going there again on Monday, maybe I will get better photos, ha! π

So happy for you! Keep going! They leave soon for Canada. I think people here mentioned they are going to see them Monday early in case the eclipse flushes them out early. You could always come to NY in the future. You might have a better chance here. I was going everySunday for months and not seeing them close but there were too many people there. I was envious if the people who could go during the week and were able to see it close. All the trails here opened back up but since at least one of them flies up to see us in the area thatβs always open people seem to be staying in that area.

I have been invited to return tomorrow (4/8) to Poplar Island and I’m hoping for another sighting. I will ask the tour guide about them there, I thought she said they were nesting on the island now. So no migration? I’ll be sure to ask/clarify!! Thanks Sharon!

I spent a lot of days not seeing them close enough to take a picture. They made it easy when they started coming close.
