These were on display in a store in Lake Placid. Raccoons are seen as a nuisance to some in New York. I do not know the history of these animals, whether they were trapped or road kill. My understanding from one store owner I asked a few years ago some of these displays are old.

The only place I have seen displays like this is in the Adirondacks. There is a long history of trapping in the Adirondacks beginning with the Native Americans with the Europeans entering the region with metal traps in the 16th century. Trapping still exists today in New York with a designated season to do so.
The se sweet racoons are canoeing
They are so adorable Anita

So cute, unless you are the raccoon. We have a town near us that has a gopher museum. I’ve never been but… Have a good evening Sharon. Allan

Yes, indeed. I have seen different animals on display in museums, although not like this. They usually try to recreate their habitat. You folks have a good evening too.

I saw some taxidermied squirrels rowing a canoe in an antique shop in Pennsylvania. I like the raccoons better, but agree with Allan: it’s cute unless you’re the animal involved.

Would never want a raccoon to see that. I have met a lady who has a chipmunk visit her. She gets it in little scenes she constructed and takes their picture. Chipmunk raring at a mini picnic table, water a garden etc. it’s a real live chipmunk who probably eats nuts and seeds she left in the scene.

Maybe I am in the minority, but kind of sad, really. But times change and so do tastes and outlooks.

I think there is less taxidermy than in the past. I think most who trap today it’s for food. I know people who trap animals seen as pests and relocate them. No harm is done to the animal.

Sadly, that’s not always true:

As highly intelligent we of the human race believe we are, we sometimes show more ignorance than we tolerate ourselves. After how many eons, have we really learned?

I think they’re adorable. And I will convince myself that they were roadkill and not killed specifically for these displays.
